Review of cultural identity statistics

Cultural Identity statistics encompass issues and activities relating to:

  • ethnic identity
  • religious/faith identity
  • national identity
  • social identity
  • cultural expression and diversity,
  • citizenship,
  • Māori/indigenous development,
  • economic contribution of culture,
  • immigrant settlement and social cohesion.

Statistics New Zealand is currently reviewing cultural identity statistics.

This review will identify existing data sources and determine priorities for statistical development to gain information on the way cultural identity can be measured in official social statistics.

The consultation process for this review is intended to take place later in 2008.

Sexual orientation as a potential official statistic

This paper broadly evaluates the need for sexual orientation statistics within the context of Statistics New Zealand's wider Review of Cultural Identity Statistics.

The need for information about gay, lesbian and bisexual populations is a topic of emerging social and political enquiry.

This paper discusses the need for official statistics on sexual orientation and related statistical measurement issues.

Public consultation on the Review of Cultural Identity Statistics is intended to take place later in 2008.

This paper has been released prior to that consultation process because of the interest in information on the topic of sexual orientation and because of the current census consultation process.
