Statistics about New Zealanders with disabilities are available from the 1996, 2001 and 2006 Disability Surveys. These surveys collected information on the prevalence, nature, duration and cause of disability, and on the barriers that people with disability encountered in everyday life.
Statistics are available for children (0 to 14 years) and adults living in households, and for adults living in residential facilities.

The generalised sampling error tables from the technical notes in the Hot Off the Press should be used as a guide for judging the reliability of estimates in these tables.
Further tables, to be released at a later date, will include information on the nature of the disability, characteristics of people with disability and current and unmet needs of people with disability.
