Corrections

Statistics about corrections give information about custodial and non-custodial sentences imposed on people convicted of crimes. Collected by the Department of Corrections, they include details about prison and community-based sentences.

Also available is information from a census of prison inmates, last undertaken in 2003, which includes details on age, ethnicity, major offence type and sentence length.

A new report entitled "Offender Volumes" presents information on the offender population managed by the Department of Corrections, both in prison and in the community. The sub-groups analysed are sentenced prisoners, inmates remanded in custody, prison release-ordered (released on parole, home detention, post-release conditions, or extended supervision), and those serving community-based sentences. Key variables are Offender counts, Corrections management category, Corrections management history for individuals, age, sex, ethnicity, type of offence. Information is available by annual throughput as well as monthly snapshots (or musters) and giving historic trends. The report will be updated annually.
