Statistics about crime and justice include the number of crimes recorded by the Police, apprehensions by the Police, prosecutions and convictions in the criminal courts, the types of sentences imposed, and information on numbers of people who are in prison or serving community-based sentences. These statistics also contain information on the type of offence (eg violence, property or drugs).
Statistics are available from a web-based tabulation tool available on this website:
- Table Builder (Crime Tables, and Conviction and Sentencing Tables).
Additional statistical reports are available from:
- the Police
- the Ministry of Justice (courts)
- the Department of Corrections
Because not all offences that are committed are discovered by, reported to, or recorded by the Police, the Ministry of Justice has conducted a series of surveys to estimate the number of victimisations. The latest of these is the New Zealand Crime and Safety Survey 2006, which will provide information on people's experiences of crime.
Review of crime and criminal justice statistics
Statistics New Zealand has undertaken a review of New Zealand’s crime and criminal justice statistics and produced the Review of Crime and Criminal Justice Statistics Report 2009. The report identifies enduring research and policy information needs, where these are currently met, where there are gaps, and identifies the key areas for statistical development in the field of crime and criminal justice.
The Review of Crime and Criminal Justice Statistics Report 2009 followed the Review of Crime and Criminal Justice Statistics: Consultation Paper which sought input from users of crime and criminal justice statistics in New Zealand.
Statistics NZ will now establish and lead a group of key justice sector agencies. This group will develop and oversee a plan that will successfully implement the recommendations.
