Statistics New Zealand is seeking submissions on crime and criminal justice statistics
Background
Statistics New Zealand is undertaking a review of crime and criminal justice statistics. Reviews of official statistics are undertaken periodically to ensure that the statistics are sufficiently relevant and robust to meet the current and future needs of users. The last review on New Zealand crime and criminal justice statistics occurred in 1982. Since then there have been significant changes in the criminal justice sector in New Zealand, in statistical information needs, and the capacity to meet these needs.
Submission process
Statistics New Zealand is seeking submissions from users of crime and criminal justice statistics, and people with an interest in crime or criminal justice-related policy or research.
A working group and steering group of partners in the justice sector and the official statistics system have assisted in the preparation of the consultation document, provided below.
The information provided in submissions will assist Statistics New Zealand to gain a better understanding of the information needs, to identify significant gaps and shortcomings in the available statistics, and to set priorities for the official statistics system to address.
How to make your submission
A consultation paper representing initial views of Statistics New Zealand and the working group of criminal justice sector agencies is provided below. It would be useful to read the paper before making your submission. You can make a submission by downloading the submission form and sending your completed submission to social.conditions@stats.govt.nz.
All submissions will receive an acknowledgement email.
Closing date for submissions
Your submissions must reach Statistics New Zealand by 6 August 2008.
Reporting back
A report taking into account submissions received and containing final recommendations of the review of crime and criminal justice statistics will be published early 2009.
Each submission will be considered against the criteria outlined in the submissions form, and will assist in formulating recommendations for the final report of the review of crime and criminal justice statistics. All submitters will be notified when the final report is published on the Statistics New Zealand website. All submitters will be acknowledged by name in an appendix to the revision report. Generally, submitters will not be acknowledged by name in the body of the report when views are discussed and analysed.
