Information about population includes details about the number and characteristics of people who live in New Zealand. These numbers are produced as:
- counts (from five-yearly censuses that count people and their characteristics, eg age, sex and ethnicity)
- estimates (estimated changes to the population using census counts and births, deaths and migration)
- projections (projected future changes to the population).
Population information also provides details about events that affect the number and structure of the population. These include births, deaths, migration, marriage and divorce. Here are the latest population indicators.
Information about people's living arrangements in households and accommodation in private housing and homes are provided in estimates and projections of dwellings and households.
Reprioritisation of outputs
Statistics New Zealand has reprioritised parts of its programme of outputs.
-
The subnational family and household projections, which were due to be released on 30 January 2009, have been delayed to the first half of the 2009/10 financial year.
-
Demographic Trends will now be published on a two-yearly rather than an annual basis. This means Demographic Trends 2008 will not be published in January 2009 as scheduled. The next volume will be Demographic Trends 2009, which is likely to be released in January 2010.
-
The Tourism and Migration annual updates will no longer be produced. Tourism and Migration 2007 will be the last in this series. Future updates of most information in this report will continue to be available elsewhere.
