Every five years, a Census of Population and Dwellings counts all the people in New Zealand and their dwellings.
It gives a snapshot of New Zealand at a certain point in time, and includes information about New Zealanders' age, sex, family type, education, ethnic groups, employment, where they live, and kind of housing.
Census usually resident population counts record numbers of residents according to where they usually live and excludes those who usually live overseas.
Census night population counts record all people in New Zealand (including visitors) at the place they were counted on census night.
