Population estimates

The estimated resident population indicates the number of people who usually live in an area at a given date.

Information is available by age, sex and ethnicity for New Zealand as a whole and for areas within New Zealand.

Population estimates are derived from the latest census data with adjustments for net census undercount, residents temporarily overseas on census night, and births, deaths and migration following the census.
