What is the average annual household income?

If you want to know the average annual household income, the Household Economic Survey (HES) is the only source available. Of all the income measures produced by Statistics New Zealand, the HES is the best indicator of how, overall, New Zealanders are doing financially.

The HES provides a comprehensive range of statistics relating to household income and expenditure, as well as demographic information on individuals and households. The survey shows annual income from all sources at both the person and household level.

An annual rather than a weekly measure of income tends to give a better indication of living standards, since an annual measure gives a longer-term view of an individual's or household's income. The emphasis on households within the HES is also useful for assessing living standards, as it shows the number of individuals supported by a given income.
