On 20 November 2001, the Representation Commission released details of the proposed General and Māori electoral district boundaries. These boundaries are based on electoral populations calculated from the results of the 2001 Census of Population and Dwellings and the 2001 Māori Option.
Table 1, in the attached file, contains indicative General and Māori electoral population data at the meshblock level. The corresponding area unit, territorial authority, regional council, proposed General electoral district and proposed Māori electoral district is also supplied for each meshblock.
Meshblock electoral populations do not add exactly to the electoral populations of larger areas. However, they generally give a good indication of relative electoral populations. The non-additivity results from the use of random rounding and from fractions in the electoral formulae. Definitive electoral district populations, as in Tables 3 and 4, are calculated at the electoral district level rather than the meshblock level.
Table 1 shows the code for each geographic area. The descriptors for the area unit, territorial authority, regional council and proposed General electoral district and proposed Māori electoral district can be found in Tables 2.01 to 2.05.
General and Māori electoral populations are provided at the electoral district level in Tables 3 and 4.
