Highlights


At 30 June 2007:

  • Sheep numbers fell to 38.5 million, down 4 percent from 2006.
  • Dairy cattle numbers reached 5.3 million, up 2 percent from 2002.
  • Dairy milking cows and heifers numbered 4.2 million, up 8 percent from 2002.
  • The area planted in kiwifruit rose to 13,250 hectares, up 12 percent from 2002.
  • There were 29,620 hectares planted in wine grapes, 17,170 hectares were in Marlborough.

 During the year ended 31 March 2007:

  • New area planted in forestry fell to 2,600 hectares, down 92 percent from the 33,700 hectares recorded in the 2002 Agricultural Census.
