Highlights


  • Social motivations were the main reasons for people moving to their current usual residence (21.7 percent of movers), closely followed by environmental reasons (21.1 percent).
  •  

  • Almost one third of movers within New Zealand moved from their previous usual residence for economic reasons (32.0 percent). Purchase or construction of a house was the most common economic reason.

     

  • Nearly half of those who moved at least once within New Zealand since March 2005 were aged under 30 years (45.1 percent).

     

  • 85.7 percent of movers rated their current overall living conditions as better or much better than before they moved. 

     

  • Three out of 10 people (29.5 percent) living in the Canterbury region have moved within New Zealand since March 2005, the highest for any region.
