In early March 2005, Statistics New Zealand released short articles on three of New Zealand’s commercial fish species, to open environment statistics to a wider audience.
The articles include monetary and physical estimates for commercial stocks of pāua, freshwater eels and rock lobster. These statistics are supported by background information about the life-cycle of each species, fishing techniques, imports and exports, and how New Zealand’s Quota Management System allows us to estimate the value of stocks.
A spreadsheet with regional statistics for 16 major commercial species is also available. It contains asset value, catch and export statistics for each species. The regional breakdown is a useful supplement to Statistics New Zealand’s Fish Monetary Stock Account released in January 2005.
Articles about greenhouse gas emissions and energy are being prepared to complement the existing Energy Flow Account. These will be released within the next few months.

The Fish Monetary Stock Account provides information on the asset value of New Zealand’s commercial fish resource for the period 1996 to 2003. This account gives annual asset values for 10 main species (hoki, rock lobster, snapper, orange roughy, pāua, squid, ling, hake, oreo dorie, tarakihi) and a total value for the resource. For more information, please contact environment@stats.govt.nz.

The Water Monetary Stock Report was released in December 2004. The report contains partial monetary accounts for freshwater stocks, which show indicative monetary values for water. It also discusses valuation techniques used, and background information relevant to the future development of the water accounts. For more information, please contact environment@stats.govt.nz.

Energy Flow Account
An updated Energy Flow Account for 2000 and 2001 is being prepared for release later in 2005. The Energy Flow Account provides information on the flows of energy products within the New Zealand economy. The updated account will also contain enhanced information on flows of greenhouse gas emissions from energy use. For more information, please contact environment@stats.govt.nz.

Environmental Protection Expenditure Account
Environment Protection Expenditure (EPE) is an internationally recognised term that describes all goods and services aimed at protecting the environment and encouraging sustainable use of the earth's natural resources. Estimates of EPE are collected to help analyse the impact of economic and social policy on the environment, and to provide an indication of the economic response to environmental policies and regulations. They can also enable a calculation of the contribution of the 'environment industry' towards gross domestic product.
Statistics New Zealand previously published an EPE report and tables, for the public sector, for the year ended June 2001. Additional estimates are being made for the 2002 and 2003 June years and will be published in the next few months. For further information, contact environment@stats.govt.nz.

Land use/cover account
The development of a land use/cover account for New Zealand is planned. This challenging work will aim to produce a comprehensive picture of how land in New Zealand is used, and to create a way of monitoring changes over time. If you would like to stay informed about this project, or wish to comment on early proposals, please contact environment@stats.govt.nz.
