An agreement between Statistics New Zealand and the New Zealand Vice Chancellors' Committee (NZVCC) was signed on 15 August 2007 by Geoff Bascand (Government Statistician) and Lindsay Taiaroa (Executive Director, NZVCC). With the signing of this agreement, Statistics New Zealand will supply a statistical data package to New Zealand Universities.
This agreement is seen as a chance for Statistics New Zealand to educate university users in the wealth of information that we hold that could benefit them in adding value to their education and research.
The statistical data package includes free access to the Information Network for Official Statistics (INFOS, a time-series repository), Access to Microdata (AtoM), and basic New Zealand Confidentialised Unit Record Files (CURFS). With INFOS planned to become freely available in 2008, it is hoped that this package will be extended.
The successful implementation of this agreement will see greater uptake and more effective use of statistical products and services by the tertiary sector, as well as an extension of available data through the establishment of a social sciences data package^.
For further information about this agreement including more detailed information on this data package, please contact your university contact officer.
The following are Statistics New Zealand products that may also be of value to university users:
- Table Builder
- The Census of Population and Dwellings Meshblock dataset
- Digital Boundaries
- StreetLink
- The long-term data series (1840–2004) developed by the New Zealand Treasury
^ The Social Sciences Data Package is still under development and is scheduled for release in early 2008.
