Drawing good graphs information

There are lots of different types of graphs which can be used at different times to show information clearly. Here are some graphs which you may have heard of: pictographs, tally charts, bar graphs, histograms, stem and leaf graphs, block graphs, dot plots, strip graphs, back-to-back stem and leaf graphs, box and whisker graphs and composite bar graphs.

A good graph:

  • accurately shows the facts
  • grabs the readers attention
  • makes text more interesting
  • shows trends or changes
  • is clear and easy to read
  • has a title and labels
  • uses colour or patterns to show differences
  • clearly shows what the data has to say.

Ask yourself: Is my graph easy to understand?
