Go to the Statistics New Zealand website www.stats.govt.nz and click on 'Visitor Arrivals Jun Mth" under Latest Information. (It is up at the top of the page.) Then click on External Migration: June 2003 Media Release. Scroll down to the paragraph beginning 'Permanent and long-term (PLT) arrivals. Using the information in this release:
- Write the definition for permanent and long-term (PLT) arrival(s) and permanent and long-term (PLT) departure(s). (Go to surveys, statistical methods and references on the left hand column of the webpage and click on glossary to help you).
- When arrivals exceed departures, it is called net migration gain. Write five statements about the net migration gain for June 2003.
- Locate and name the countries from which New Zealand received significant net inflows on a map of the world. Draw arrows to indicate the relative size of each country’s contribution to the New Zealand population.
- To which country did New Zealanders permanently migrate to (net outflow) in June 2003? Is this up or down on the figures for June 2002 and June 2001? Locate this country on your world map also.
Go back to the previous page, click on Downloadable Excel table(s), open alltabls.xls and refer to table 3 Net Migration June 1993 - 2003.
- Draw a column graph to show the net gain or loss from permanent and long-term migration for the year ended June 1993 to 2003.
Under surveys, statistical methods and references on the left hand column of the webpage , click on Survey directory. Under migration, click on jump to: Design. Read about the purpose and nature of the data collected on the passenger arrival and departure card and then scroll down to open the current passenger arrival card (front) and the current passenger departure card.
