How is the Consumers Price Index organised information

The goods and services covered by the Consumers Price Index (CPI) are classified into nine groups, 21 subgroups and 73 sections. The nine groups are:

    Food
    Housing
    Household Operation
    Apparel
    Transportation
    Tobacco and Alcohol
    Personal and Health Care
    Recreation and Education
    Credit Services

The CPI includes a wide variety of items ranging from apples through to dental charges. Over 700 items are price-surveyed for the CPI.

Here are some selected subgroups from the nine CPI groups listed above.

The changes in the index numbers reflect the price change in each subgroup. You can use the index numbers to work out the percentage change in prices.
