Fitness levels

From a random sample of 30 Year 7 boys and girls, the CensusAtSchool survey showed:

  • 6 of the 30 exercised as they travelled to school. The remainder rode in a vehicle.
  • 16 of the 30 ran around and played at lunchtime and playtime while the remainder sat down, stood around, or walked around a little.
  • 20 of the 30 took part in weekend activities that made them huff and puff.

Activity

  1. Find out what random sample means.
  2. Think of five survey questions of your own that would help build a picture of exercise levels among children at your school. Pair up with a classmate and share your questions. Decide on the best questions and make a “high five” list.
  3. Pick a class level at your school, ask some students your questions and record your data.
  4. Display your data on a table. Use the CensusAtSchools summary tables.
  5. Write a statement under your table that shows what you have found out.
