Agriculture is very important to New Zealand. It is our largest industry and our main export group. For the year ended March 2002, agricultural exports were valued at over $14.8 billion.
In 2002, Statistics New Zealand, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, carried out the 2002 Agricultural Census. In June, 2002 Agricultural Census forms were posted to all farmers. The results will tell us about agriculture in New Zealand, for example, the number of sheep and cows, and how much land is used to grow kiwifruit and pine trees.
