Activity Open two Internet explorers, one with this page containing the instructions and one with the Statistics New Zealand homepage www.stats.govt.nz
The standards for athletics, (track and field) are very high and eight athletes have been selected for New Zealand’s team in Athens. That’s just eight out of how many New Zealanders? Check out New Zealand’s population clock. This is a ratio of 8:4.06 million.
Perhaps an athlete would have had a higher chance of making the team for the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Nine athletes were picked then! Check New Zealand’s population estimates in March 2000. Can you work out the ratio?
The first of the Modern Olympics were held in 1896. Have a look at the population figures and see if the chance of getting in an 1896 team would have been higher. Can you work out the ratio?
Let's narrow down the numbers so your chance of making a future team is higher!
Activity one
1. Go to the Statistics New Zealand homepage www.stats.govt.nz 2. Click on Census (left-hand column). 3. In the census of population and dwellings page, click on the magnifying glass in the right-hand column.

7. Scroll down to the excel tables.
8. Open table one age, sex, for people. This table shows the number of people who usually live in New Zealand in 1991, 1996 and 2001 and their age groups.

- Which year group were you part of in 2001?
- How many children were in your age group in 2001?
- Which year group had the most people in 2001?
- From which year group do you think most of the 2004 Olympic team came from?
Activity two
We are still looking at BIG numbers. Let’s raise the chance of you getting picked for the Olympic Games.
What if the selectors could only pick athletes that lived in your area? Let's check out these statistics. We want to look at the number of people in your region and their age groups.
1. Go to the Statistics New Zealand homepage www.stats.govt.nz
2. Click on Census (left-hand column).
3. In the census of population and dwellings page, click on the magnifying glass in the right-hand column.

 4. This will take you to the census table finder page which looks like this.

 5. Select Age then click Add.

6. Click Find tables.
7. We are going to use table builder to build a table about your area and age groups.
8. Under the heading table builder format, click on table two age, sex for people.
9. Using the Selection Menu, click on Area.

 11. Using the Selection menu, click on year. Untick 1991 and 1996 so we just look at 2001 information.

12. Using the Selection menu, click on Age Group.
13. Open the yellow folder and select your age group from the list by ticking the box.

14. Then click View Table in the selection menu box. Have a look at the number of children in your age group living in your region in 2001. Remember, there are eight athletes for the 2004 Games. What is your chance of making the Olympic team if the selectors only picked from your region? Work out the ratio.
