Census treasure hunt activity

There is lots of information on Statistics New Zealand's website. This activity takes you on a treasure hunt to find some answers from the 2001 Census of Population and Dwellings.

Activity 1

Print out this page first, so you can answer the questions while you explore the site.

1. Go to this web page: http://www2.stats.govt.nz/census2001.htm
2. Under the heading “Quick facts” select the area that you live in and then click "Go". 
3. Use this information to answer the following questions:


(a) In the total population are there more males or more females in your area? ____________


(b) Has your area gained or lost people since the 1991 Census?______________




Activity 2


1. Return to: http://www2.stats.govt.nz/census2001.htm
2. Click on "Community Profiles".
3. Click on the region you live in. Scroll down to find if these statements are true or false.


(a) There are more children (0-14 years old) living in my area than people aged 65 years and over.    
True     or      false?

(b) Compared with the rest of New Zealand, more households where I live have access to the Internet.    
True     or     false?


Activity 3

1. Return to: http://www2.stats.govt.nz/census2001.htm
2. Click on "Choose subject".  It’s under the heading “Quick facts”.
3. Choose "Children" and click "Go".
4. Scroll to the heading "Home life" and answer this question: 

(a) What fraction of New Zealand households have children living in them?_________


Activity 4

1. Return to: http://www2.stats.govt.nz/census2001.htm
2. Go down to “Detailed statistics”.
3. Under "By subject" choose"Family and Households" and click "Go".
4. Scroll down to TABLE 1 and click on it.
5. Click on the icon to open the file. Answer these questions:

In 2001, which was the most common number of children for:

(a) A couple with children?       1,       2,       3,     or       4+

(b) One parent with children?     1,       2,       3,     or       4+

 

Activity 5

1. (a) Think of the name of the city or cities in the area where you live and write them on a piece of paper.

     (b) Now write the names of as many cities as you can in the rest of New Zealand.

2. Return to: http://www2.stats.govt.nz/census2001.htm
3. Scroll down to “Detailed statistics”.  
4. Under "By area", click on"Find area boundaries using WebMap".
5. To check your answers click in the "Features" box, and then click the "Update Map" button.
