Counting people in New Zealand activity

The 2001 Census counted 3,737,277 people who usually live in New Zealand. The census tell us about where people live, how old they are, their qualifications, their occupations, the type of households they live in and their family structure.

Activity

  1. Find out which region you live in.
  2. Has the number of people in your region increased or decreased between 1996 and 2001?
  3. Write a list of all the regions showing the largest region to the smallest region.
  4. Which three regions have grown the most between 1996 and 2001?


Use the tables on the website to look at your region in more detail. The tables are to area unit level, which is like a suburb.
 

  1. How many people live in your area unit or suburb?
  2. Has the number of people changed in your area between 1991 and 2001?


You could also use WebMap to find out about your area. On the WebMap page near the bottom, type in the name of your suburb, select a region and click 'search'. The search should bring up a map showing your suburb. Then click on the 'get statistics' button and click on your suburb on the map. This will give you some statistics about your area.
