Farming activity

Sheep

New Zealand farms sheep and cattle for sheep meat, beef, wool, dairy produce and hides. In the last few years, farmers have been farming different animals like deer, goats, ostriches and llamas. 


The information in the graph below comes from the 1999 Agricultural Production Survey. The Excel file with the data for the graph is attached at the bottom of the page. Results from the 2002 Agricultural Production Census are available now.

Wool exports

New Zealand sheep produce crossbred (strong) wool. This type of wool is used for carpets, upholstery, furnishings, bedding and rugs. It is also used for handknitting yarn in knitwear. The Excel file is attached at the bottom of the page.
