Background
The February 2007 edition of the schools' newsletter, StatZing! uses a recent media release about agricultural statistics to help students develop the ability to interpret, evaluate and communicate about statistical messages. The activity listed above, relates to the activities in StatZing!
- This activity requires students to read a section of the Hot Off The Press – Agricultural Production Statistics (Provisional): June 2006 (PDF) and have a thorough understanding of the section that they have selected to re-work. Working in a group for the initial readings could help with this.
- There is enough material in each of the livestock sections to make either a table or a simple graph. Encourage students to create their own graphs rather than suggest how they should create them. If they are unsure direct them to classroom texts or the CensusAtSchool website (www.censusatschool.org.nz) to refresh their memories.
- A discussion about the kind of language suitable for students three years younger may be appropriate.
- Ensure that students understand that the sentences that they write from their research should also be for younger readers.
