Please note: there is no separate activity page for this topic. Teachers notes
This activity requires students to collect their food price data for two months (refer to activity 1 in Primary StatZing! September 2007 (pdf, 329KB)). By completing the table in this activity, students will be able to answer the question below.
Key question: Do you think that food is becoming more expensive in New Zealand? Provide evidence for your answer. |
Teaching points
- At the end of the second month students will need to calculate the number of items that have increased, decreased or stayed the same and record that in the table below.
- Students need to calculate the percentage of the sample that these totals represent and record in the table.
- Using the result from the table students will be able to make either a pie or stacked column graph (using Microsoft Excel) to display their findings.
- The results from across the class can also be collated in a table such as the one below.
- The total number of items would be number in class x 20 ( the number of items in each basket).
- Percentages can be calculated from this total number.
- Discuss the benefits of using this larger sample base, especially when answering the key question.
- Discuss the trend that emerges from the classes survey and compare with the FPI results on the Statistics New Zealand website.
