What we know about New Zealand: 1
Students need to be encouraged to look at the New Zealand in Profile 2006 tables in depth to see what stories they tell. You may need to go over some of the tables with your students to explain the differences between them. Not all the stories are the same. It is important to discuss the statistical language contained within the tables, such as percentage, increase, decrease, total, distribution, most common, and also the units of measure used.
When the cubes are complete they can be can be hung at different lengths to form a class mobile under the title "What we know about New Zealand".

Students are asked to source information about a topic, selected from the New Zealand in Profile 2006 list below:
Culture, Population, Demography, Households, Household spending, Tourism, Education, Justice, Economy, Businesses, Retail sales, Exports, National finance, Labour force, International travel, Earnings, Environment, International comparisons.
Once a student has decided on a topic, they need to select the heading on the web version of New Zealand in Profile 2006. Here they will find related links, specific reports, websites and tables about their chosen topic.
As students complete their tetrahedron, they can compare and discuss points of interest with other students who have chosen the same topic. Then all tetrahedra can be hung at different lengths to form a class mobile under the title "What we know about New Zealand".
