Background On Tuesday 6 March 2001, every person in New Zealand was asked to fill out a census form as part of the 2001 Census of Population and Dwellings. March is chosen for the census because most people are back from holidays and there is not much seasonal work that takes people away from their homes. To find out more about the 2001 Census, have a look at the page called Information about the 2001 Census on Schools Corner.
The 2001 Census asked questions for the first time about household access to the Internet. The Who has access to the Internet activity? asks students about their Internet access at home and shows some results from the 2001 Census on Internet access by income, region, household type, urban and rural and ethnic group as well as household access to telephone and fax machines.
The activity Counting people in New Zealand looks at the growth between 1996 and 2001 of New Zealand's 16 regions. The activity looks at increases, decreases and changes in population numbers. It also links to tables containing more detail about your region.
