2001 Census Education Resource Kit

Tuesday 6 March 2001 was census day in New Zealand, a day when every adult and child in the country was counted in the five-yearly Census of Population and Dwellings.

Statistics New Zealand has developed an education resource for primary, intermediate and secondary schools. The activities in the resource kit include ideas on collecting information about your class, activities to use at the beginning of the school year and social studies activities to use throughout the year.

A team of teachers and resource writers has put together cross curricula activities that are easily photocopied. The activities incorporate the essential skills of gathering, sorting, interpreting and presenting information.

The "2001 Census Resource Kit" includes themes of special interest to students such as sport, families, children and young people, changes in communication and technology and transport. There is also a Māori language resource available – Te Kete Tatauranga.
