NCEA Mathematics Achievement Standard AS90645

  • Complete a statistical investigation involving bivariate data

Mathematics: Statistics strand  level 8

  • Investigate relationships between two continuous variables, using graphical methods (including linear regression), calculate correlation coefficients to estimate the strength of linear relations, and discuss the appropriateness of any regression line or correlation.

Background

Data which is related to the student's local area is available. It can be used in a similar way to the "Drift to the north" activity. Because it is local, students can interpret the results more accurately and make decisions based on their local knowlege. The data is not continuous data and cannot be used in assessments for the current version of 90645.

Instructions

This link will take you to a page on Table Builder which has the data used in the "Drift to the north" activity. The activity uses area units in territorial authorities (TAs).

  2. Click on each ticked box to clear them.
  3. Click on the folder to expand the list of TAs available.
  4. Put a tick in the box for the TA you require.
  5. Click "view table" to return to the table.
  6. Clicking on the name of the TA will expand it to show the area units.

Clicking on the word "total" next to age or sex will let you expand these. Alternatively, to choose other options:

  1. Click on age group on the left hand side.
  2. Untick the box by clicking on it.
  3. Expand by clicking on the folder.
  4. Choose the groups you want by clicking in the box next to them.
  5. Click "view table".

Make sure all the categories you need are expanded in the table builder file, then click on "download" to get the data as an Excel file.

Table builder contains many useful datasets. This link has more general instructions for using it to find the data you want.
