Geography tables teachers page

The New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings, held every five years, is the official count of the total number of people and dwellings in New Zealand.
 

The tables below contain 1991, 1996 and 2001 Census data on the following topics: the census usually resident population count, ethnic group, religious affiliation, birthplace, usual residence five years ago, main means of travel to work, access to telecommunication systems, occupation, number of motor vehicles, income, highest qualification and tenure of household.


The tables will be useful for geography teachers and students when studying how many people there are in New Zealand, New Zealand's population structure (for example age, sex and ethnicity), where the population is located, why people move from place to place, living conditions in New Zealand and population changes over time.
