A university is designing an ad campaign to attract students. The basis of their campaign is ‘People with degrees have higher earning power’.
A sample of 200 people under the age of 45 years is taken to investigate this claim.
They realise that a problem with their proposed campaign slogan is that there is also a relationship between the amount earned ($NZ) in a week and number of hours worked per week.
You need to investigate the relationship between income and hours worked for various qualification groups in the SURF for Schools dataset. Choose two relevant qualification groups to investigate.
For each qualification group you choose you will need to:
- Justify why choosing this group is relevant to the problem.
- Draw at least one appropriate graph.
- Interpret and describe the relationship in context.
- Discuss how appropriate your model is by talking about the correlation coefficient (r), the coefficient of determination (R2) and the effects of any outliers.
- Use your analysis to come to a conclusion about whether gaining a degree increases earnings. Justify any statements you make.
- Evaluate what you have done. What are the limitations of your analysis?
- How could you have improved your analysis of the problem? What other information or types of analysis would be useful?
