Equal pay!

Part 1

One of the changes that has occurred in recent decades is an increase in the number of women with careers. There has also been an increase in the number of women with higher academic and vocational qualifications. However, many people believe that there is still a large difference between the earnings of males and females.

Using the data from the SURF for Schools dataset, investigate if the above belief is true.

You will need to:

1.                  Calculate some statistics

2.                  Draw some useful graphs

3.                  Give a conclusion.

Part 2

Just analysing the whole dataset might give a misleading result. There may be some differences due to women having higher qualifications than in the past. Investigate the earnings of males and females in two different qualification categories.

You will need to:

1.                  Calculate some statistics

2.                  Draw some useful graphs

3.                  Give a conclusion

4.                  Write an evaluation of what you have done.

Part 3

Are there any other factors that may affect earnings? Often differences occur because of hidden variables. For example, people working part time will have a smaller weekly wage, or age may be a factor in what people earn. Redo the investigation in part 2, taking into account a factor from the dataset that you think may be useful. You can use one of the ones mentioned or your own choice.

You will need to:

1.                  Justify your choice of factor

2.                  Calculate some statistics

3.                  Draw some useful graphs

4.                  Give a conclusion

5.                  Write an evaluation of what you have done.
