Problem
The Singles are Totally Awesome Band (STAB) is a pressure group working towards stopping prejudice against those who have never married. Their opponents, the Married are Best Society (MABS), are working just as hard to promote the superiority of those who are married. Your task (as an impartial investigator) is to check out the following questions:
- Are people who have never been married different from married people?
- What are the differences and similarities of the people in these two groups?
Plan
You are looking at two groups of people – married people and those who have never been married. Think about which variables in the dataset will best show the differences in the two groups.
Data
Choose three variables from the dataset to investigate for each group. One should be a categorical variable and one should be a numerical one. The third should be age.
Analysis
You need to:
- Think about why you picked your two variables. Write a sentence explaining your thinking.
- Draw a suitable graph for each variable (one should be a box-and-whisker plot). Each graph should let you make a sensible comparison. Underneath, write the information the graph gives you so later you can use this information to help write your conclusion. Choose either a box-and-whisker or composite bar graph for each variable.
- Do some calculations that will help you answer the questions. Underneath, write the information the calculations give you so that later you can use this information to help you write your conclusion. The calculations you could choose from are: mean, median, mode and range.
Conclusion
- Write a conclusion in answer to the questions. Use the information you wrote earlier to state the evidence that backs up what you have said.
- Write a paragraph on what other variables you might have needed to answer the questions. Explain why they would be useful.
