Mathematics, Statistics Strand - Level 5, Level 6 and Level 7
Mathematics Achievement Standard 1.5 - Use straightforward statistical methods to explore data
Mathematics Achievement Standard S3.1(draft) - Determine the trend for time series data
Background Teachers need time series datasets for the times series parts of statistical investigations in the statistics strand of the curriculum.
Statistics New Zealand releases many of these time series datasets in Hot Off The Press information releases. Each release has a spreadsheet that contains time series data. Currently, these usually contain only three years worth of data.
The attached Excel workbook contains some longer time series from Statistics New Zealand's Retail Trade Survey. It provides some examples of how you can use spreadsheet software to create the graphs and transformation needed for the time series component of the maths curriculum.
- The Food worksheet in the workbook is an example of explorations that your students can do themselves using time series data from Statistics New Zealand.
- The Clothing worksheet contains the clothing retail trade series, the Consumers Price Index and lots of empty space for you to re-do what you did with food series.
- The More worksheet contains more retail trade time series. You can pick ones that you are interested in.
