Quarterly Regional Reviews

Quarterly Regional Reviews to be discontinued

For the 2008/09 year, Statistics New Zealand has reprioritised outputs to ensure we can successfully deliver a work programme of relevant, fit-for-purpose statistics. As a result Statistics NZ will discontinue the production of the Quarterly Regional Reviews.

Although Statistics NZ will no longer compile and disseminate the Quarterly Regional Review, or relaunch it as Local Insight as proposed, most of the information provided within the report will still be available although some specialised analyses may be chargeable. Indicators used within the reports, and accessibility options, are outlined further below.

Despite this change, Statistics NZ continues to have a wealth of useful local information available and our team will continue to be available to help users with sub-national information and advice.
 
The reviews, which were produced for all regional councils and territorial authorities (excluding Chatham Islands Territory), contained a range of information from a variety of Statistics NZ and external data sources.
 
The final Quarterly Regional Reviews released were:

Information included

Information within the reports is still available, although some specialised analyses may be chargeable. Indicators used within the reports, and accessibility options, are outlined below.

• Retail trade
  The Retail Trade Survey is designed to produce accurate national retail estimates. Sub-national estimates, such as the ones displayed in the quarterly regional reviews, are below design level and come with a risk that the selected businesses are not representative of the population and the resulting estimates may not be reliable. This information is still available by contacting the information centre, although a charge may apply.
• Average hourly earnings
  This data is sourced from the Quarterly Employment Survey. As with the retail data, the estimates shown in the quarterly regional reviews were below design level. Further disaggregations are available, although a charge may apply. For more information please contact the information centre.
• Economic indicators
  This, GST based, information came from the Regional Economic Indicator (REI) series. Following the preparation of the March 2008 quarter information this series has been discontinued at this time due to increasing quality concerns.  

External data utilised

• Secondary school leavers by level of attainment
  This data is available from the Education Counts website, the Ministry of Education's online space to access statistical data, quantitative information and research about the education sector.
• Car registrations by postal district
  Sourced from Land Transport New Zealand, from New Zealand motor vehicle registration statistics.
• Real estate sales
  This data is supplied by the Real Estate Institute Of New Zealand (REINZ), and can be obtained by subscribing to the Residential Housing Facts publication.
• Public hospital discharges
  This data is sourced from the New Zealand Health Information Service, please contact inquiries@nzhis.govt.nz.
