Meshblock Dataset

The 2006 Meshblock Dataset contains counts starting at the meshblock level for selected variables from the 2006, 2001 and 1996 Census of Population and Dwellings, rebased to 2006 Census boundaries. These counts are at the highest level of each variable’s classification. The dataset also contains counts for area units, wards, territorial authorities and regional councils.

Boundary Maps

Static maps of area units, territorial authorities and regional councils used in the 2006 Census can be viewed online.

Births and deaths

Statistics on births and deaths (along with marriages and divorces) are often referred to as 'vital statistics', as they provide the basic demographic information about a population and its changes over time. This information can be used to monitor demographic and social trends, and to plan for needs for future community services. Final statistics on the number of births and deaths registered in New Zealand are usually available about seven weeks after the end of each quarter (ended 31 March, 30 June, 30 September and 31 December).

Statistics New Zealand's annual publication Demographic Trends carries a table giving live births and fertility rates for regional council areas based on the latest three-year period. The publications are available free of charge on the website. See Demographic Trends 2007 for the latest table (chapter 2, table 2.16).

Other birth and death statistics for regions, cities and districts are available as customised requests and generally incur a charge.

New Zealand recorded crime statistics

This collection is sourced from New Zealand Police administrative data on recorded and resolved crime, as well as offenders apprehended for these crimes.

These statistics were previously publicly available from New Zealand Police. The measures used to protect confidentiality are the same as those applied by New Zealand  Police. In particular, statistics on age are presented in age groups and a number of potentially sensitive variables have been excluded. The figures presented in tables have not been subject to any additional form of statistical confidentialisation, such as random rounding.

Income

Average hourly earnings estimates from the Quarterly Employment Survey for males and females are available quarterly for regions, and for cities and districts, subject to quality constraints. Information relates to the pay week ending on, or immediately before, the 20th of the middle month of the quarter (that is, February, May, August and November). More detailed regional estimates are available for February when a larger sample is taken.

Average weekly income from the New Zealand Income Survey is available for the June quarter for 12 regions which combine Gisborne and Hawke's Bay regions, and Tasman, Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast regions. Average weekly income is related to the respondent’s most recent pay period.
