Highlights


  • The Food Price Index recorded a 0.4 percent increase in July 2005 compared with June 2005. 
  • Meat, fish and poultry increased 2.4 percent, influenced mainly by higher prices for beef steak.
  • Grocery food, soft drinks and confectionery increased 0.3 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food increased 0.2 percent.
  • Fruit and vegetables decreased 2.2 percent.
  • The Food Price Index increased 2.1 percent from July 2004 to July 2005.
  • Statistics New Zealand is currently reviewing the classification system used to classify goods and services in the Consumers Price Index basket and is inviting submissions. See the commentary of this release for more details.
