In May 2006:
- Guest nights were 4 percent higher in the South Island and at a similar level in the North Island compared with May 2005.
- Total guest nights were 2 percent higher than in May 2005.
- The trend in total guest nights has flattened since October 2004.

- Four of the five accommodation types recorded more guest nights than in May 2005.
- Seven of the twelve regions recorded more guest nights than in May 2005.
- The Canterbury, Wellington and Otago regions recorded the largest increases in guest nights compared with May 2005.
