Guest nights in short-term commercial accommodation were 3 percent higher in September 2006 than in September 2005, Statistics New Zealand said today. However, the trend has been flattening since October 2004, following a period of increases that began in July 1998.
In September 2006, guest nights were 5 percent higher in the North Island and 1 percent higher in the South Island compared with the previous September. Nine of the 12 regions recorded more guest nights, with Wellington, Taranaki/Manawatu-Wanganui and Canterbury recording the largest increases.
All five accommodation types showed more guest nights in September 2006 than in the previous September, with motels showing the largest increase.
