 For the June 2007 month, there was no overall change in food prices, Statistics New Zealand said today. Prices for the meat, poultry and fish subgroup fell 1.2 percent while prices for the restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food subgroup rose 0.5 percent.
Within the meat, poultry and fish subgroup, lower prices for poultry (down 2.3 percent), preserved, prepared and processed meat (down 1.6 percent) and pork (down 5.2 percent) were the main contributors to the subgroup decrease of 1.2 percent.
The rise in prices for the restaurant and ready-to-eat food subgroup came mainly from higher prices for ready-to-eat food (up 0.8 percent).
For the year to June 2007, food prices rose 3.0 percent. Prices were up for all subgroups. The most significant rise came from higher prices for meat, poultry and fish (up 8.1 percent), followed by restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food (up 3.9 percent), non-alcoholic beverages (up 5.1 percent), grocery food (up 0.7 percent), and fruit and vegetables (up 0.1 percent).
