
There were 347,000 tonnes of wheat harvested during the year to 30 June 2007, Statistics New Zealand said today. The wheat was harvested from 41,000 hectares, an average yield of 8.5 tonnes per hectare. This is up from the previous year when there was an average yield of 6.9 tonnes per hectare.
During the year to 30 June 2007, there were 337,000 tonnes of barley harvested from 54,000 hectares. A year earlier an estimated 277,000 tonnes were harvested from 47,000 hectares.
Favourable weather conditions with plenty of rainfall between November and January were experienced in the main wheat and barley growing regions in the year to 30 June 2007.
There were 193,000 tonnes of maize grain, 29,000 tonnes of oats and 15,000 tonnes of cereal grain harvested during the year to 30 June 2007.
These provisional figures were released in addition to the 2007 Agricultural Production Census provisional results released in February 2008. Final results, including regional statistics, will be available in May 2008.
