In 2014, the Research and Development Survey included four types of questionnaire – one for each category of organisation:

1) Businesses
2) Crown research institutes (CRIs)
3) Government sector
4) University sector.

The questions were similar in each type of questionnaire, but some questionnaires included extra questions. For example, the business questionnaire had questions on return on investment and future expenditure on research and development (R&D).

The university questionnaire collected data about expenditure and personnel in an Excel spreadsheet to make it easier to replicate and collect data for individual faculties within the university.
