Survey at a glance
The Longitudinal Immigration Survey: New Zealand (LisNZ) is a survey of new migrants to New Zealand.
Purpose To find out about new migrants’ settlement experiences during their first three years in New Zealand. This will help the government and support agencies to improve settlement for new migrants.
Selection process
Random selection of people who were approved for permanent residence in New Zealand.
Sample size Approximately 5,000.
Frequency
First wave of interviews: May 2005 to May 2007. Second wave of interviews: May 2006 to May 2008. Third wave of interviews: November 2007 to November 2009.
Results
Information will be released progressively from mid-2008 onwards. Results from the first wave of interviewing was published in a Hot Off The Press released on 19 May 2008. This was the first public release of statistics from the LisNZ survey and was a joint effort by Statistics New Zealand and the Department of Labour.
The Department of Labour’s International Migration, Settlement and Employment Dynamics (IMSED) Research Group have published a comprehensive report on the results from the first wave: New Faces, New Futures: New Zealand.
Results from the second wave of interviewing were published in a Hot Off The Press released on 29 May 2009. This release reports on information collected during the first two waves of interviews.
