Respondent advocate

Statistics New Zealand has appointed a respondent advocate, who works on behalf of respondents to review our survey demands on individuals, households, or businesses.

This role is separate from the operational processes associated with collection activities of Statistics NZ and enables objective advice to be provided to the Government Statistician.

Information about how and when to contact the respondent advocate are available on the concerns about completing a survey? web page.

FAQs about our surveys

Find answers to frequently asked questions about our surveys, including the scope of a particular survey, how to give data, and where to find results from previous surveys.

For information about the relationship between you and us, see Charter for Individual and Household Surveys or the Charter for Business Surveys.

Legal requirements

The Statistics Act 1975 outlines the legal requirements for individuals and businesses who are randomly selected to complete our surveys. These surveys are a major source of official statistics that help the government, community organisations, business, industry, academics, and the public understand our society and economy – and to make key decisions.

Minimising respondent load

The Respondent Load Strategy, published in February 2008, provides a framework for initiatives over the next three to five years that manage and minimise the respondent load associated with Statistics NZ surveys. For businesses, individuals, and communities, the strategy will clarify the expectations placed on them and the value exchange associated with providing data.
