About the survey

What is the purpose of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) Survey?

It measures the nature of the ISP industry in New Zealand. The data from this survey will contribute to policy decisions and international comparisons.

Who is included in this survey?

This survey includes all ISPs in New Zealand (a census of approximately 70 business in New Zealand).

What is this information used for?

The results of the survey will help individuals, communities, businesses, and government to understand how information and communication technology is changing the economy and society. This information also allows a measurement of the global connectivity of New Zealanders, which is regarded as an important determinant in accelerating economic growth.

How often does this survey take place?

Every year.

If my business is included in the survey, who should provide the information?

The Owner, Operations Manager, Accountant, Sales Manager, or someone who knows about Internet service provision by your business.

What if my business is not engaged in ISP activities?

If your business has not performed Internet services over the last year, please complete the relevant questions and return your survey.

How is my privacy protected?

Under the Statistics Act 1975, only authorised people can see your individual information and they must use it only for statistical purposes. Your information will be combined with information from other respondents to prepare summary statistics. Statistics NZ makes sure that no individual response can be identified when the results are published.

About your obligations

Why should you provide information to Statistics New Zealand?

Under the Statistics Act 1975 you must provide the information we requested. It is important that information from all of the businesses surveyed is accurately represented in the statistical results.

Will I be paid for providing information to Statistics New Zealand?

Providing information to Statistics New Zealand is a statutory obligation. There is no provision in the Statistics Act 1975 for people to be paid for providing information. Where possible, we request information in a way that is easily obtainable from business records. We also recognise that completing survey questionnaires can be time consuming. For some surveys, we provide survey respondents with information that can be useful for your business planning purposes. Also, survey results are available free of charge on the Statistics New Zealand website.

Do I need to complete this survey?

Yes. Businesses selected for any Statistics New Zealand survey must provide the information requested. This is a legal requirement under the Statistics Act 1975.

Accessing statistical information 

When will results from this survey be available?

Yes, information is used every six months in the Internet Service Provider Survey. Use this link to access key results from other Statistics New Zealand surveys.

How is statistical information available?

Many statistics are available to you and your business as it is 'public good' information. This means that you can access this information free of charge, from this website, or by contacting our Customer Services staff via email info@stats.govt.nz, or by phone at your nearest Statistics New Zealand office. Our newsletters also contain information which you may find useful. The information available could assist you in business planning and for monitoring business performance.
