International

Vital statistics

Data on fertility are collected by most countries. Although this standard is not based on an international standard or the standard of another country, the concepts and definitions used are consistent with those recommended by the United Nations Statistics Division.

Census of Population and Dwellings

A question on number of children born alive has featured in the censuses of many countries.

The Statistical Standard for Fertility is consistent with United Nations' recommendations.

Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses, Revision 1

makes the following recommendations for questions on children born alive.

Data on number of children born alive (lifetime fertility) should:

  • preferably be collected from women aged 15 years of age and over, regardless of their marital status
  • include all children born alive during the respondent's lifetime
  • include all children born alive, whether the children are:
    • born in or out of marriage or a consensual union
    • born in the present or a prior marriage
    • living or dead at the time of the census
    • living with the respondent or living elsewhere at the time of the census.
  • exclude foetal deaths, stepchildren and adopted children.
