The statistical standards for labour force status and status in employment are closely related and share the same definition of employed. Labour force status classifies people according to their inclusion or exclusion from the labour force. Status in employment examines those people in the labour force who are employed.
The classification is based on the International Classification of Status in Employment (ICSE) although it does not follow this strictly.
"The ICSE classifies jobs held by persons at a point in time. A job is classified with respect to the type of explicit or implicit contract of employment of the person with other persons or organisations. The basic criteria used to define the groups of the classification are the type of economic risk, an element of which is the strength of the attachment between the person and the job, and the type of authority over establishments and other workers which the job incumbents have or will have."
