The Ministry of Health is the Government's principal advisor on health and disability. The Ministry's role is to improve, promote, and protect the health of New Zealanders. It retains centralised funding for a range of national services, including disability support and public health services.
New Zealand Health Survey
Description of key content
The New Zealand Health Survey (NZHS) collects information on the health of New Zealanders and the health services they use. It includes a wide range of topics covering health behaviours and risk factors, health conditions, health status, health service use, and patient experiences. The survey includes adults and children.
A question has been included in the NZHS to establish if a participant was resident in Christchurch at the time of the 22 February 2011 earthquake. The inclusion of this question will help in analyses to measure the long term health impacts of the earthquake.
Frequency and scope
In the past, the NZHS was repeated at regular intervals. The NZHS was conducted in 1992/93, 1996/97, 2002/03, and 2006/07. From April 2011, the NZHS and the various surveys that were part of the wider survey programme (eg, Adult and Child Nutrition Surveys, Tobacco and Alcohol Use Surveys) have been integrated into a single survey, which is in continuous operation.
The geographical coverage is national.
Christchurch households will be invited to participate in the NZHS as it is important to collect health information from residents who are affected by the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. The survey commenced in the least affected parts of Christchurch in May 2011 and will gradually extend across the city from June 2011. There will be flexibility around the timing of interviews to ensure additional stress is not created for people.
Methods of collection
Data are collected through face-to-face computer-assisted interviews.

Results from previous health surveys and ways to get data and statistics from these surveys are published on the Ministry of Health website www.health.govt.nz.
The Mortality Collection provides data for public health research, policy formulation, development and monitoring, and cancer survival studies. A complete dataset of each year’s cause of death data is sent to the World Health Organisation (WHO) to be used in international comparisons of mortality statistics.

Public Health Intelligence Online (PHIOnline)
PHIOnline lists the following objectives of its visualisation tool: to aid local agencies to achieve their desired health outcomes, to aid local authorities and health providers to fulfil their responsibilities under the Local Government Act 2002, to reduce the cost of information dissemination, and to make government information more easily available.

National Minimum Dataset (NMDS)
The National Minimum Dataset is used for policy formation, performance monitoring, research, and review. It provides statistical information, reports, and analyses about the trends in the delivery of hospital inpatient and day patient health services, both nationally and on a provider basis. It is also used for funding purposes.
