2011 Census Date Announced
Statistics New Zealand has announced Tuesday, 8 March 2011 as the date for the next New Zealand census.
"The census is the official count of population and dwellings in New Zealand and gives a 'snapshot' of our society at a point in time. It is taken every five years and counts everyone in New Zealand on census night. The census provides key information about the people living in our cities, towns, suburbs, and rural communities,” says Acting Government Statistician Cathryn Ashley-Jones.

Review of Culture and Identity Statistics
Public submissions close on Friday 14 August 2009.
Statistics New Zealand is undertaking a review of culture and identity statistics and is seeking submissions from data users and people with an interest in culture and identity related policy or research. A consultation paper, Culture and Identity Statistics Domain Plan: Draft for Consultation is available for public feedback until Friday 14 August 2009.
The review is part of the Programme of Official Social Statistics (POSS), which identified culture and identity as one of 12 topics of importance for individual and civil well-being requiring development for statistical information purposes.
Although future census development will be informed by the review's recommendations, there will be insufficient time to fully consider them for the 2011 Census. With this in mind, no recommendations will be made for the 2011 Census.

2011 Census Update
Development of the 2011 Census is progressing well and is focused on both the large field test in 2010 and the census proper in 2011.
Census will conduct a large field test of approximately 8,000 dwellings in March 2010. This will enable us to test our systems and processes ahead of the census proper in 2011.
The Census team is in the middle of a large procurement process, securing services such as:
- field maps
- printing of paper questionnaires
- the public contact centre
- the online census form
- advertising
- and public relations advice.
