Statistics New Zealand has no hard and fast rules regarding a retention policy. We believe the librarian at the partner library is the best judge of which material should be kept and for how long, while keeping in mind the needs of their community.
Suggestions to guide your decision-making:
- Yearbooks - keep these books but if you can't keep all,
keep runs of perhaps every five years
- Annuals - retain for five years
- Monthly and quarterly publications - retain for a year or retain one copy per year
- Census of Population and Dwellings - keep your most recent census publications, and the regional and topic-based publications from previous censuses .
Historical publications
If you require historical publications, we suggest that you contact Statistics New Zealand or the National Library, where all our publications are held as legal deposit.
